Those are the results of a special ESPNET SportsZone poll that asked basketball fans to choose the top 10 players in league history, and sort them in order. They chose from the pool of 50 players honored by an expert NBA panel before the season and celebrated on All-Star Weekend.
Jordan, who has won four championships and four season MVP trophies, was the runaway choice in balloting. He picked up more than four times as many first-place votes as the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the league's all-time leading scorer. But voters didn't suffer from short memories, as eight of the top 10 players are, like Abdul-Jabbar, retired.
The vote also settled several other popular arguments, such as: Who was the better center, Bill Russell or Wilt Chamberlain? Although Russell won more championships, Zone users were more impressed with the career of Chamberlain, the only player ever to score 100 points in a game.
A total of 7,856 ballots were cast while the poll was open, Feb. 6-11. For full results, check the chart at right.
